Health Benefits of Elderberry Syrup
January 6, 2016
Elderberries are well known for their healing properties; in fact, they are known for treatments of cold and flu, arthritis, boosting the immune system, sinus, back, sciatica, neuralgia, and pain associated with these symptoms. Additionally, Elderberries can be used for food and wine making as well.
Recently, my son's day care has had weeks of children sick and my son was not isolated from the cold and flu season. He shared his love by sharing his cold and flu with the entire family. I meant to make this recipe before cold and flu season came, but without going into details my kitchen was not available.
I decided I would try to make the Elderberry Syrup that all the Naturalist, Homeopaths, and Herbalist have been talking about. I modified the recipe to include a few additional herbs to help with cold and flu and focus on arthritis.
Here is the simple and easy recipe, warning your house will smell horrible for a few hours.
Elderberry Benefits - Organic Dried Elderberries should be boiled to release any toxins before consuming. Helps with alleviating joint pain associated with swelling or arthritis. Can help alleviate soreness and muscle ache associated with sinus, sciatica, neuralgia, and cold and flu. Elderberries are also used to treat respiratory symptoms like asthma, bronchitis, coughing, and sinusitis.
Honey Benefits - Organic Raw Unrefined Honey should be boiled to remove any impurities. This recipe should not be used on children under 2 years of age. You can omit the Honey if you are using this recipe for a child. I used a Mesquite Honey, you can use Manuka or any other organic honey. Honey helps with soothing sore throat and cough. It also has anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant properties. Honey can help as an energy booster, immunity booster, digestive aid, and soothe sore throats.
Cinnamon Benefits - Contains anti-microbial compounds and helps with absorption and circulation. Cinnamon’s an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-inflammatory, immunity boosting, lowers blood pressure, anti-diabetic effect, neuralagia and neurodegenerative diseases. It is also known as a bacteria fighting herb with anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties.
Ginger Benefits - Helps with digestion, sinusitis, nausea, and anti-inflammatory. Ginger helps with digestion, reduce nausea, and helps fight cold and flu symptoms. Ginger is also known to reduce muscle pain and soreness that can be caused by arthritis swelling and pain. Ginger is also known as an anti-inflammatory which is a great benefit for Osteoarthritis, Arthritis, Fibromyalgia which can reduce pain and stiffness and joint swelling.
Star Anise Benefits - Helps respiratory tract infections, lung swelling, inflammation, cough, bronchitis, flu, is a great antioxidant to help protect against free radicals. Star Anise has anti-inflammatory properties, which makes this a great herb to help with Arthritic symptoms and is also a great herb for bronchitis, sinusitis, asthma, and cold and flu.
Elderberry Syrup Recipe
1/2 Cup Organic Dried Elderberries
3 Cup Water
1 Cup Organic Unrefined Mesquite Honey
3 Organic Anise Star or (1 TBL Anise Whole)
1 TBL Organic Ground Ginger (May include Organic Fresh Ginger)
1 Organic Cinnamon Stick
Place all ingredients in a pot to boil, do not include the Honey until the mixture reaches a boil.
Boil ingredients and then Simmer for 30-40 minutes
After Simmer, crush or press the Elderberries in the mixture. Strain the mixture and then let it reach room tempature before storing the mixture in a glass jar. You can use the same techniques as canning to preserve the mixture. Boil mason jars and lids, pour ingredients in the jars, then place the closed jars in boiling water, remove and let them hit room temperature. Store the glass jars in the refrigerator, shelf life is 2-3 months. Based on the recipe above you can create 3 1 DRAM botles and 3 4oz Mason Jars. I doubled the recipe, if you are near me in Orange County, CA hit me up I have extra.
